DIE MENSCH-MASCHINE (Germany, 1978)

I've been eager to get an early edition of the German Die Mensch-Maschine cassette - I posted a mid 80's reissue of it a year ago, but you can never beat an original can you?


I never know which versions to call "first editions", but it appears that the blue cassette is at least one of the first. There is also a black edition, from around the same time, and a "Club-edition" which I suppose was sold via mail order - that one is also blue but clearly marked and different to this. (And it's an under-documented field of research, so I suppose there are others as well!).

Whatever the edition though, Die Mensch-Maschine cassettes all come with a small and flimsy 1-panel J-card, with the track listing on the inside. Labels are printed directly onto the shell, light blue print on a darker blue cassette. I think it's a pretty sight, although it isn't exactly in keeping with the El Lissitsky-influenced artwork of the LP...

On a personal note, I ordered a copy of this during the pandemic, but it has yet to materialise... A rare occasion of things getting lost in the mail for me. Kraftwerk (Poland, 199?) Unofficial TomZo 0090 The Polish takeover continues with another pirate cassette, today it's a compilation! Well, kind of.   I've touched before on the anything-goes attitude, typical in Poland in the late 80s and through the 90s. Today's item is a brilliant case in point; nearly a two-for-one, it has most of the The Man-Machine album on side one, and most of the Computerwelt album on side two. Yes, one in English, the other in German! 'Neon Lights' is omitted from the first, while Computerwelt is presented here without 'Taschenrechner' _and_ 'Nummern'. All three are key tracks, although I suppose nearly every track is key on these two releases... It's especially baffling that 'Nummern' is not included, since it's sort of a medley with the next song, 'Computerwelt 2', so this one starts rather abruptly after the ending of it's counterpart. THE MAN·MACHINE (Poland, 198?) Starling S114 Time for boots, here's another unofficial edition from Poland - this time, it's The Man-Machine! To my shock, I see I haven't had any Starling cassettes yet. I did touch upon the pirate cassette scene in Poland before though, and Starling was one of the more prolific companies there, with hundreds of releases to choose from... I think they were active from the mid-80s sometime and well into this millenium, and there were several Kraftwerk cassettes and variants as well. Today's edition is one of the many editions of The Man-Machine. Or I should say Die Mensch-Maschine, as the song titles on the cover are in German, although the title is in English... It plays the German version though, many Polish Kraftwerk cassettes have German-language contents . Well, they are neighbours, sharing 500 km of border.
